The
Romania Ministry

First, we would
like to thank you for visiting our website. It is our prayer that
you will receive a blessing as you read of God’s faithfulness at
Fairhaven, and Help for Others. The purpose of this site is not
only to inform you, but to lift up our Lord in a way that only He
will be honored and glorified.
We became involved
in Romania in 1995. Since then, we have had the privilege of
serving in many different areas of the country. The Lord has
allowed us to work with street children, in orphanages,
children’s homes, nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, to help
with many individual needs, to have Vacation Bible Schools,
Medical Mission Trips, and also, as of December 2008, to ship 64
containers of supplies to be distributed throughout Romania.
Through all of
this, I have made mistakes, but have also learned a lot.
It has always been the desire of my heart to be the proper
steward with what the Lord and others entrust us. Through the
years, we have learned much in this area.
For example, just
in giving out the clothes, food, and other things, we have found
that these items can be more of a blessing to those who are
actively trying to help themselves.
Through the years, we have ‘fine tuned’
this giving. An example of what we mean is that clothes given
to the very poor people are never washed, but used until they are
very dirty and then added to the cooking/heating fire. We do not
find this to be good stewardship, even though the need seems so
clear. We find that anything we do also has to involve “teaching
people to fish, rather than just giving them a fish”.
Often, this education comes in the form of health
instruction in things as simple as drinking and eating.
Many of the poor
forage for their food and heating materials, often using plastic,
such as 2 liter bottles, for cooking and heating. They would
prefer to use wood. But in the city, it isn’t easy to
find. So,
they use whatever they can find. When you enter these homes,
instead of finding beds, you will often find huge piles of clothes on
which they sleep. The reason is that the clothes are freely given
by the West.
Currently, most of our hands-on work is
being done in the nursing homes and medical facilities in the
judits of Arad. Much has improved in these homes but we see there
is still a great need for volunteers - people whose goal is to go
and visit people in these homes, many of whom have no contact with
family.
We
have been working in Romania long enough to have made many
mistakes and been deceived by people along the way. For anyone
wanting to work or contribute to any work in Romania please read Letter of
advice for working in Romania.
This will provide you with insight on things I have learned from
my mistakes.
In His Service,
Johnny Huffman
