Fairhaven Update May-9-2019

Galatians 6:9-10–9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Dear Friends,

I apologize that it has been so long since I sent out an update. I sometimes think it simply can’t be any busier, and then the Lord opens more doors to serve. It is then that I think of the verses above, and our responsibility to serve, whether we are tired or not. I do thank God for the opportunities to serve Him and serve others. It is my thought that serving is a privilege which God grants us. We thank Him for touching hearts, then people responding, in order to make it all possible.

Several things have happened since I sent out the last update letter.

First, Sissie and I have 2 from here graduating from High School this year—Emily and Harold. Also, Mimi will be graduating from Lee Road Jr. High and going to High School. Then we have a granddaughter in Texas graduating from High School, and also a granddaughter graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University. May is a very busy month but we have so much to be thankful for.

Also, since I sent out the last letter, the Lord has again miraculously opened the doors and presented the opportunity to ship to Malawi and Belarus. Each of those containers will have 22,000 pounds of beans and 20,000 pounds of rice, plus other much needed items.

We are still working on filling a container for Transnistria also and hope to ship it in June. It is all in God’s timing.

Friends, a continued need for every country we ship to is simple, basic medical supplies, in case you would like to help in some way. Just a couple of other great needs with all of the flooding in Malawi and surrounding countries are both tarps and blankets.

Recently, we had a couple, Brian and Kallie Vallecillo, come to visit who have a burden for helping the medical clinics on the island of Roatan, in Honduras. I am attaching a short biography of the ministry the Lord has directed them to, plus a list of the needs there.   We never know how the Lord may touch someone to help.

Through the years, the Lord has allowed us to see many, many miracles in providing for both here and abroad. When I am invited to speak, I can honestly say that it is not to solicit, but to share our Lord’s faithfulness, to glorify Him, and to encourage others. Sissie and I often have people to ask us about writing a book. I’m not sure that will ever happen, but I thought that in my updates I may share some “miracle stories” from time to time. In this one, it is about an EEG machine.

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. May the Lord continue to bless you all.

In His Service,

Johnny

Following Faith

Following Faith is a nonprofit organization devoted to equipping communities of the Honduran Bay islands to provide the best medical care possible. We truly believe all people, no matter what, deserve proper medical care. I started Following Faith after researching the available medical resources on the Bay Island of Roatan, Honduras. I noticed a pattern of needed items and less than desirable conditions. Being a nurse, I realized that like triage nursing, it is easiest to help the most amount of people with the most basic supplies. It was then that my team and I started partnering with clinics and Honduran residents to help them provide quality medical care.  We will stop at nothing to make sure as many people as possible get the care they deserve.

We are currently partnered with a clinic on the East side of Roatan, Honduras. The community of Oakridge is one of the poorest communities on the island. Oakridge Community Clinic services the community and provides care to an average of 30-40 patients per day. The most common illnesses are uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. These are easily manageable diseases but can lead to death without resources to manage them properly.

Oakridge clinic operates solely on donations and volunteers. They are only receiving enough donations to employ a doctor part time, but their goal is to offer more clinic hours to better serve their community. The cost of a employing a doctor for more hours would cost 500 USD a month.

Most importantly, the clinic building is in poor condition and is taking on water through cracks in the walls and failing foundation. The people of Oakridge depend on the community clinic for their medical needs and in the current condition of the clinic is at risk of failing. A local engineer visited the clinic and gave a quote of 47,500 USD to save and rebuild the building to meet the expanding needs. We would like to raise enough funds to make the rebuild and staffing a reality for Oakridge.

In addition, we are hoping to supply enough materials to reduce the burden of everyday operation. Attached is the supplies needs list, with the more urgent needs highlighted in yellow. To make this possible we are asking for your support and prayers. I thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Blessings,

Kallie Vallecillo, RN

Miracle of the EEG Machine

When in Romania, I would often visit hopitals, clinics, and other medical facilities to find out their needs.

On one trip, I visited a children’s neurological clinic, met the doctor, and found out they had need for carpet and paint. We shipped these items to them in the next container.

On my next trip, I went to visit them again and the doctor told me that she did not want to impose on me but wanted to show me their 15 yr old EEG machine. I can just say that it was in terrible shape, but that they were still trying to use it.

On returning home, I put the word out for an EEG machine and tried to find one for 6 months. Nothing happened.

Six months later, I was on my way back to Romania. I boarded the flight from New Orleans to Atlanta and “just happened to sit with two ladies (nurses) on their way to a seminar in Atlanta. As we sat and talked, they found out that I was on my way to Romania and wanted to know all about what we did there.

As we were leaving the plane in Atlanta, one of them said “Johnny, there has to be something we can do to help you”. I quickly told them about my need for an EEG machine and what it was for. I left them and never heard from them again.

I was gone to Romania for about 2 weeks. Several weeks after I returned from the trip, I had an email from a neurologist in Greenville, S. C.

In her email, she said that she had read, in a medical journal, about what we did and about my need for an EEG machine. She stated that they had one only 2 years old, in perfect working order, and would like to donate it. I drove to Greenville on a Monday, back home on Tuesday, and shipped it in a container the following Saturday. It has been a blessing to hundreds of children.
